Your pathway to a Masters degree in the UK in engineering or computing

The programme includes academic modules, study skills and English language training, providing complete preparation for your Masters in computing or engineering. Learning in small-sized classes, you will receive 18 hours of teaching per week.

Is this programme for me?

Through the Pre-Masters Programme in Engineering and Computing, you will:

  • develop your understanding of concepts within mathematics and computing, including hardware, software and issues around design and usability.
  • gain the mathematical skills necessary for postgraduate study by covering topics such as linear, second order, constant coefficient ordinary differential equations and apply to the modelling of engineering problems.
  • complete a subject related research project.

Why study the Pre-Masters Programme in Engineering and Computing?

  • Improve upon the knowledge you gained in your undergraduate degree.
  • Continue to develop your English skills, ready for postgraduate study.
  • Liverpool John Moores University is ranked 18th in the UK for General Engineering (The Complete University Guide 2024).

What will you study?

In this one-semester programme, you will study a subject-specific modules alongside the Academic English and Research Skills module which is designed to improve your English levels and your academic skills to prepare you for postgraduate studies at Liverpool John Moores University.

Modules

This module aims to develop your English language capability to an IELTS equivalent of 6.5. It will also develop your critical awareness, analytical and evaluative study skills, and provide you with practice in secondary research skills.

This module aims to provide you with knowledge of the fundamental concepts within computer science and an understanding of hardware, software and issues around design and usability. You will learn how to use and select different IT applications and bases for particular situations. By the end of the module you will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the core concepts of key technologies and physical infrastructure elements used in computing. You will also be able to examine the nature and development of software and explain how computing interacts with social, organisational and individual user factors.

This module aims to refresh and further develop the common mathematical skills necessary to support you in preparation for progression to postgraduate programmes in Engineering and Computing. You will cover topics such as linear, second order, constant coefficient ordinary differential equations and apply to the modelling of engineering problems. You will also be taught to apply symbolic mathematical software e.g. Mathcad, in the solution to problems involving topics on the syllabus.

Study Group is permitted to assess students’ suitability for entry onto programmes which are degree level and above under the registration for the UK Office for Students. You are therefore not required to have a UKVI SELT to obtain a Student Visa when you come to campus.

If you begin your course virtually and transfer to the UK to complete your programme, you may be issued a Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS) based on the Academic English Skills module assessments (as part of your Pre-Masters).

A CAS for a Student Visa will only be issued if you have met the minimum language requirement of CEFR B2 in all skills, and the academic entry requirements for your chosen programme.

Progression degrees

Successful completion of this programme leads to a range of postgraduate degrees at LJMU, subject to achieving the required grades. As well as achieving the grades necessary, you will be required to take an Academic English Studies (AES) test at the end of your course. Once you successfully complete this, you will be ready to start your degree at Liverpool John Moores University.

Along with being invited to attend a graduation ceremony organised by the International Study Centre, students who successfully complete their pathway programme will be provided with a transcript and certificate. The award of any certificate is made in line with the Final Transcripts and Awards Certificate Policy and the Certificate and Transcripts for Students on Collaborative Programmes Policy, which are available via the Policy Centre.
