The programme includes academic modules, study skills and English language training, providing complete preparation for you to begin the second year of your undergraduate degree.

What will you study?

The International Year One in Business is a two-semester programme. You will study a mix of subject modules, and classes that will help you to succeed at LJMU.

Please note that you are expected to attend 100% of your classes at the International Study Centre or you are at risk of losing your Student visa.

Core modules

This module aims to provide an introduction to business economics as a foundation for further study. The emphasis will be on economic theory and real concepts developed from real world business issues. Essentially, this module introduces you to economics and applications related to business, providing you with an introduction to modern economic principles and macro and micro economics.

Academic English Skills aims to provide thorough training in the language and related academic skills which will enable international students to best achieve their academic potential at university. Our Academic English programme is validated by UK ENIC, the UK government agency responsible for providing information and expert opinion on qualifications and skills worldwide. 

You will develop awareness and competency in a range of language-related academic skills, including the processes of academic writing, effective and extensive reading strategies, effective participation in seminars and delivery of presentations, and listening to and recording information effectively from lectures. You will also develop the accuracy and range of written and spoken language required to use language effectively and appropriately, with clarity and confidence in an academic context. 

Alongside your classes, your studies will be supported by an online learning platform, providing you with a range of tasks and activities specifically designed to develop and extend your language and academic skills outside the classroom and to give you more control over your own learning. 

This module will enable you to establish a sound foundation in basic bookkeeping and accounting techniques. You will gain experience in preparing basic financial accounts and in describing the issues influencing the preparation of financial accounts.

This module will explain the principles of designing management and cost accounting information systems, and to explain the principles of evaluating management and cost accounting systems.

This module allows students to be able to identify how businesses create opportunities for success and adapt marketing strategies. Also allowing students to explore how businesses focus on gaining a competitive advantage through interacting with customers.

This module aims to provide a basic knowledge of mathematics for ongoing study at university in a business related subject. This unit will allow students to acquire the fundamental concepts of business maths, using a selection of real world applications.

Optional modules

In this module students will analyse corporate strategy and objectives and develop an understanding of the impact of external influences.

This module builds on the module ‘Introduction to Financial Accounting’, and will further develop your financial accounting knowledge and provides an introduction to the regulatory framework of accounting corporate governance and ethics.

Progression degrees

Successful completion of this programme leads to a range of undergraduate degrees at LJMU, subject to achieving the required grades. As well as achieving the grades necessary, you will be required to take an Academic English Studies (AES) test at the end of your course. Once you successfully complete this, you will be ready to start your degree at Liverpool John Moores University.

Along with being invited to attend a graduation ceremony organised by the International Study Centre, students who successfully complete their pathway programme will be provided with a transcript and certificate. The award of any certificate is made in line with the Final Transcripts and Awards Certificate Policy and the Certificate and Transcripts for Students on Collaborative Programmes Policy, which are available via the Policy Centre.
