What is the higher education system in the UK?

Undergraduate

Undergraduate programmes are three-year courses focused on a particular area of study. This is shorter than in other countries, and means that it is possible to graduate sooner, which could save you money on living costs and tuition fees.

At LJMU, most undergraduate degrees are made up of two semesters each year, and you will study core modules that are relevant to your degree each semester. As your degree progresses, you may have opportunities to specialise by choosing from a range of modules.

Postgraduate

Postgraduate programmes are usually more specific than undergraduate degrees. This allows students to choose a Masters that suits their career ambitions. A Masters degree at LJMU is usually a one-year programme that is studied across two semesters. By completing a Masters in the UK, you show employers that you're dedicated to your field, and have the skills to be successful in many job roles.

Pathway programmes

You can begin your studies with a pathway programme at LJMU International Study Centre. Upon successful completion of our programmes, you can progress to a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

Teaching and learning in the British education system

There is often flexibility to degree programmes in the UK. The options available allow you to pick your modules and shape your studies to make sure the programme you choose suits you.

If you study in Britain, you will be expected to learn independently outside of your classes. LJMU has three well-equipped libraries, which will give you the facilities you need to succeed in your studies as well as a quiet place to focus.

While you will be working independently, staff at British universities are trained to provide support to students throughout their course. At the International Study Centre and throughout your degree at LJMU, you can rely on the support and encouragement of staff who truly want to help.

After completing your undergraduate or postgraduate degree, you will be given an award, such as Bachelor of Science for undergraduate students, or Master of Arts for postgraduate students.

After I finish my programme I aim to progress onto Nautical Science at the University. I have been to visit the specialist facilities that the University has in this area, including the ship’s bridge simulator. This has been really useful as it’s helped me to understand more about what I’ll be doing next year and get a sense of my future job.
