Student’s football dreams come true at LJMU

With the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations kicking off in Egypt in June, we take a look at former student Mohamed's experience meeting his hero, footballing legend Mo Salah.

In 2019, former International Study Centre student and football superfan Mohamed achieved his dream of beginning a Medical Sciences degree at LJMU.

“It was the best day of my life”

Mohamed, a big Liverpool Football Club supporter, had a dream come true in May 2018. Through the Egyptian Society at LJMU, French TV station SFR Sport invited Mohamed to watch a match at Anfield stadium and meet some of the players afterwards, including his football hero and fellow Egyptian Mo Salah.

Mohamed said “It was the best day of my life. When I entered Anfield for the first time, it felt like I was dreaming, everyone was singing for Mo Salah. I was then led to the Players Zone and I saw all the players and Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp. When I finally met Mo, he said that he would probably see me again, sooner or later, as we both lived in Liverpool.”

Meeting Mo Salah has been a lifelong dream for Mohamed. He said “I come from a small village in Cairo called Kafr Elgemal. I used to watch Mo and the other players at Anfield on TV wondering if I would ever have chance to meet them, now I am back in Egypt for the summer and everyone is treating me like a celebrity because I had a photo with Mo!”

Home to two of the UK's most famous football clubs, Liverpool attracts many international students who have a passion for sport. Having completed his International Foundation Year in Engineering, Computing and Life Sciences, Mohamed is now studying BSc (Hons) Medical Sciences at the University.
